A local professor and poet says his recent poem on the revolution in Iran evokes a time when poets tackled tough political issues.

It’s called A Poem for Nayda, a tribute to a young woman who bled to death June 20th during recent demonstrations in Iran. Rutgers University Camden English professor Dr. Rafey Habib is the author:

“One of the things that poets should be doing is addressing these important issues. And poets always have in the past. For the last more than 2000 years, poets have been very, very political. And it’s only in recent times that poetry in the West has become somewhat apolitical.”

In January 2009, KBC Media acquired news organization Elites TV, and earlier this month I was named Editor in Chief.

Below is a brief history of Elites TV:

In 2001, reality TV guru and editor J.L. Thompson launched Elites TV as a global entertainment news source and fan community focused on shows such as Big Brother, Survivor, and The Amazing Race. By 2004, Elites TV had become reality TV fans’ go-to site for breaking news and gossip; staff writers provided in-depth coverage from the New York City reality TV scene, interviewing a host of reality TV producers and stars, including Mark Burnett and Survivor winner Ethan Zohn. An interactive web community, Elites TV’s community message board was home to over 20,000 reality TV fans; additionally, as an organization, Elites TV sponsored reality TV parties and events, such as NBC’s The Restaurant: Season 2 Premiere Party with Gideon Horowitz.

In 2005, entrepreneur and documentary filmmaker Chris Barrett teamed up with J.L. Thompson in an effort to expand Elites TV beyond the realm of reality television. The site acquired a new prestige as a trustworthy independent online news source. With renewed financing and an ad revenue share program, Elites TV acquired writers from all across the United States and began producing over twenty original news articles a day. In 2005 and 2006, Elites TV received over twenty million page views.

In early 2009, Elites TV partnered with some of the Internet’s most reliable news sources in order to provide the most accurate and expansive array of world news; the site now syndicates news from vital sources such as Citizen News Service, PLoSONE, Open Congress, Global Voice, American Forces/Defense Link, and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Still in synch with its roots, Elites TV remains one of the Internet’s most prominent gossip and entertainment sources, proud partners with popular sites such as The Evil Beet and Behind The Hype.

Elites TV boasts its own unique collection of guest columnists and contributors. The site has enlisted over forty gurus and personalities, such as YouTube marketer Nalts, champion poker player Roy Winston, and celebrity law expert Matthew Semino. Elites TV’s writing team continues to provide exclusive, in-depth coverage of the world’s top film festivals, including Silverdocs, Sundance Film Festival, Philadelphia Film Festival, and more. Elites TV’s articles have been quoted from and linked to on sites such as The Village Voice, Huffington Post, Gawker, Deadspin, and National Ledger; Elites TV’s exclusive videos have appeared on Drudge Report, Perez Hilton, Jimmy Kimmel Live, BBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News.

In early 2009, KBC Media, a prominent and highly acclaimed media relations firm, acquired Elites TV and its staff. Elites TV, formally based in Texas, relocated to historic Collingswood, New Jersey.

It was announced this weekend that David O. Russell is in the process of writing an adaption of Matthew Quick’s novel The Silver Linings Playbook. On March 9, I filmed Matthew Quick reading an excerpt of his novel and praising David O. Russell’s screenplay adaptation. I can’t wait to see the novel adapted into a film.

/Film, included the video of Matthew Quick reading his novel.

“Taking the Hollywood Report at face value, the screenplay hasn’t been written yet. In fact, it has, and in the video – which you can see below the break – Quick describes it as “phenomenal” and says he’s “really excited about” it. Every screenplay of Russell’s that I know, so far filmed or not, is pretty darn good so I’m inclined to believe him. And it’s good to know the creator is on side, at the very least to quell worries of bad PR and creative battles. We all know, I think that Russell loves a good creative battle (or do I just mean ‘I know we all think’?).

…The casting process is currently underway, and your Fantasy Studio actor suggestions are welcome in the comments if you have any. Here’s that video.”

SONNET 138
When my love swears that she is made of truth
I do believe her, though I know she lies,
That she might think me some untutor’d youth,
Unlearned in the world’s false subtleties.
Thus vainly thinking that she thinks me young,
Although she knows my days are past the best,
Simply I credit her false speaking tongue:
On both sides thus is simple truth suppress’d.
But wherefore says she not she is unjust?
And wherefore say not I that I am old?
O, love’s best habit is in seeming trust,
And age in love loves not to have years told:
Therefore I lie with her and she with me,
And in our faults by lies we flatter’d be.

The video went on to be featured on the front page of YouTube and on ABC News. Craig Bazan is now a theater major at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.

Titus Andronicus may be Shakespeare’s earliest tragedy; it is believed to have been written sometime between 1584 and the early 1590s. It depicts a Roman general who is engaged in a cycle of revenge with his enemy Tamora, the Queen of the Goths. The play is by far Shakespeare’s bloodiest work.

The yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window-panes
The yellow smoke that rubs its muzzle on the window-panes
Licked its tongue into the corners of the evening.
Lingered upon the pools that stand in drains.
Let fall upon its back the soot that falls from chimneys.
Slipped by the terrace, made a sudden leap,
And seeing that it was a soft October night,
Curled once about the house, and fell asleep.

And indeed there will be time
For the yellow smoke that slides along the street,
Rubbing its back upon the window-panes;
There will be time, there will be time
To prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet;
There will be time to murder and create,
And time for all the works and days of hands
That lift and drop a question on your plate;
Time for you and time for me.
And time yet for a hundred indecisions,
And for a hundred visions and revisions,
Before the taking of a toast and tea.

In the room the women come and go
Talking of Michelangelo.

And indeed there will be time
To wonder, “Do I dare?” and, “Do I dare?”
Time to turn back and descend the stair,
With a bald spot in the middle of my hair–
[They will say: ``How his hair is growing thin!'']
My morning coat, my collar mounting firmly to the chin,
My necktie rich and modest, but asserted by a simple pin–
[They will say: ``But how his arms and legs are thin!'']
Do I dare
Disturb the universe?
In a minute there is time
For decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse.

For I have known them all already, known them all:
Have known the evenings, mornings, afternoons,
I have measured out my life with coffee spoons;
I know the voices dying with a dying fall
Beneath the music from a farther room.
So how should I presume?

And I have known the eyes already, known them all–
The eyes that fix you in a formulated phrase,
And when I am formulated, sprawling on a pin,
When I am pinned and wriggling on the wall,
Then how should I begin
To spit out all the butt-ends of my days and ways?
And how should I presume?

And I have known the arms already, known them all–
Arms that are braceleted and white and bare
[But in the lamplight, downed with light brown hair!]
Is it perfume from a dress
That makes me so digress?
Arms that lie along a table, or wrap about a shawl.
And should I then presume?
And how should I begin?
. . . . .
Shall I say, I have gone at dusk through narrow streets
And watched the smoke that rises from the pipes
Of lonely men in shirt-sleeves, leaning out of windows? . . .

I should have been a pair of ragged claws
Scuttling across the floors of silent seas.
. . . . .
And the afternoon, the evening, sleeps so peacefully!
Smoothed by long fingers,
Asleep. . . tired . . . or it malingers,
Stretched on the floor, here beside you and me.
Should I, after tea and cakes and ices,
Have the strength to force the moment to its crisis?
But though I have wept and fasted, wept and prayed,
Though I have seen my head [grown slightly bald] brought in upon a platter,
I am no prophet–and here’s no great matter;
I have seen the moment of my greatness flicker,
And I have seen the eternal Footman hold my coat, and snicker,
And in short, I was afraid.

And would it have been worth it, after all,
After the cups, the marmalade, the tea,
Among the porcelain, among some talk of you and me,
Would it have been worth while,
To have bitten off the matter with a smile,
To have squeezed the universe into a ball
To roll it toward some overwhelming question,
To say: “ I am Lazarus, come from the dead,
Come back to tell you all, I shall tell you all”–
If one, settling a pillow by her head,
Should say: “That is not what I meant at all.
That is not it, at all.”

And would it have been worth it, after all,
Would it have been worth while,
After the sunsets and the dooryards and the sprinkled streets,
After the novels, after the teacups, after the skirts that trail along the floor–
And this, and so much more?–
It is impossible to say just what I mean!
But as if a magic lantern threw the nerves in patterns on a screen:
Would it have been worth while
If one, settling a pillow, or throwing off a shawl,
And turning toward the window, should say:
“That is not it at all,
That is not what I meant, at all.”
. . . . .
No! I am not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be;
Am an attendant lord, one that will do
To swell a progress, start a scene or two,
Advise the prince; no doubt, an easy tool,
Deferential, glad to be of use,
Politic, cautious, and meticulous;
Full of high sentence, but a bit obtuse;
At times, indeed, almost ridiculous–
Almost, at times, the Fool.

I grow old . . . I grow old . . .
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.

Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.

I do not think that they will sing to me.

I have seen them riding seaward on the waves
Combing the white hair of the waves blown back
When the wind blows the water white and black.

We have lingered in the chambers of the sea
By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown
Till human voices wake us, and we drown.

Take center stage with your own life script to be successful in any field.

Efren had a choice: Take a high-paying, big-studio role in Alamo, starring Billy Bob Thornton, or take a small, no-money-upfront role as “Pedro” in Napoleon Dynamite. Efren’s gamble launched him to international success and he has worked every day since.

He has been featured on the Today Show, CBS Early Show, ABC, NBC, FOX, MSNBC, CNN and profiled in People magazine twice, including the “25 Most Intriguing people” issue.

Efren and Chris wrote the script for their own lives — and now they’re living their dreams. They share their story with tens of thousands of young adults all over the country, and now they share a five-act formula to help college students and young professionals take charge of their future.
